What’s Old is New Again

The Evolving Georgetown District.

Georgetown, known for its industrial heritage, has transitioned into one of the more highly iconic Seattle neighborhoods. More often than not, industrial areas are devoid of employee amenities – not so in Georgetown. Georgetown is a dynamic community with restaurants and small businesses that provide conveniences that are not typically associated with an industrial area. Over the past several years Georgetown has become a destination, with Seattleites driving across town to eat and shop and absorb its uniqueness.

Georgetown has merged old and new industrial with urban “hipness” and is a unique example of industry and retail residing side-by-side within major, vital transportation corridors.

Steeped in History

Georgetown, often referred to as South Seattle because of its close proximity to downtown Seattle, is arguably Seattle’s oldest neighborhood. It was incorporated in 1904 largely as a defense against Seattle prohibitionists, and already at that time was home to multiple saloons and breweries, most notably Rainier Brewery, which began operations in 1882, becoming the sixth largest brewery in the world.

Today Georgetown has emerged into a diverse industrial community that hosts iconic companies such as Boeing, Starbucks’ headquarters, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Sur La Table, Amazon, Blue Nile (online jewelry) and broad ranging micro-manufacturers such as Fran’s Chocolates, Butter London, and Choice Teas. Prologis Georgetown Crossroads will bolster this diverse community with its innovative industrial design for the urban industrial user.
